The ABC Authority is posting and hiring positions for a Special Agent 1. If you are a DCJS Certified Police Officer, this might be a great opportunity for you to get into the Virginia state system and work as a Special Agent for the VA ABC Authority. I, personally, started as a Special Agent, in 2004. Today, I will talk about my experience in this position and you can decide if this is a good fit for you, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this position, you have to be DCJS certified \u2013 I graduated from Bluefield College in the Criminal Justice program, and in the last semester of college I had the opportunity to attend the South West Law Enforcement Academy, in Bristol, Virginia. I graduated with a Criminal Justice degree with a minor in Psychology and my DCJS certification. That worked out in my favor \u2013 I was immediately able to start out in my first position of a police officer as a Special Agent, with the Alcohol Beverage Control Authority, in the Enforcement division. I feel very fortunate that Bluefield College offered such an opportunity. I started out in Richmond and transferred to the coastal area, after a few years. In 2009, I wanted to be a bit more creative, pursue artistic endeavors and run my own business. Of course, a position in the Enforcement Division wouldn\u2019t allow me to practice those talents, so I branched out on my own, creating a bridge to the VA ABC Authority \u2013 as a consultant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have a personality that enjoys your heart racing, responding to accidents or domestic calls or very high-risk calls, this might not be the position for you. It isn\u2019t patrol; it is more plain-closed and investigative. You carry a weapon, but it is often concealed and you drive an unmarked vehicle. These covert trappings were some things I liked about the position. I went into licensed locations, consumed an alcoholic beverage and left to build a case against the establishment, not identifying myself (at that time) and I truly liked that investigative part of the job. You do a lot of paper and desk investigation (undisclosed ownership, applications, financial recordkeeping \u2013 things like that). I\u2019d be looking for discrepancies of underreporting, incomplete recordkeeping, or falsifying mixed-beverage annual reviews. If that sounds boring to you, this might not be a good fit for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But there are other aspects that make it appealing, too. If you like working with fellow business owners and helping them stay compliant, through training and education, you might like this job. I loved that part of my position, at the agency. I liked educating them, training them and working one-on-one with them \u2013 I loved consulting with them, individually — and that is why I wanted to leave and start my own business – I took that part of the job that I loved and created a business out of it.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ve had several former agents on the ABC Consulting team, over the last 13 years. They use their expertise to educate, license and keep fellow business owners compliant \u2013 offering our exceptional serviced to the licensee community. They all loved their jobs, for different reasons, and brought with them what they loved the most. If you want to stay in law enforcement, carry a badge and gun, and work in that public-safety \/ public-service atmosphere \u2013 Special Agent for the VA ABC Authority is an important job! You will succeed at this job, if you are good at studying rules and regulations, properly guiding licensees of Virginia, and keep up with regulation changes that happen, annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am hoping that by releasing this video, that there will be some amazing applicants for these positions \u2013 the starting pay is $68,000 (and goes up to $80,000) and they are hiring in all regions. This vacancy will close at the end of April, so if this is a state law-enforcement position that you are interested in, I hope to be working with you! That is the purpose and the mission of this agency \u2013 to keep my clients compliant and trained \u2013 and work to make the job easier for the ABC Control Authority. I want to keep the consistency of the regulation in place across the state. The clients are all across the state and we do federal licensing across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


So, in closing, if you are a good and honest person and want to help Virginia businesses to stay compliant with the laws and regulations of the ABC Authority, I hope you apply for this position: To qualify for their Special Agent 1<\/a> position, you must be a VA Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Law Enforcement Officer -Police Officer Certification with prior experience as a sworn Police Officer. The Authority needs honest agents willing to help the alcohol licensee community. If you like writing tickets and responding to high risk calls for service, a career as an ABC Special Agent may not be for you.
