What Is a Virginia Banquet License?
An individual banquet license is commonly used for private events such as weddings, receptions, reunions, showers, birthday parties and company gatherings when alcohol will be served at a location that does not already hold the appropriate ABC license.
For individual banquet events, alcohol is generally provided to guests at no charge. The event cannot be operated for personal monetary gain. Virginia ABC identifies weddings specifically as one of the common uses for this type of one-day license.

Qualified nonprofit organizations may apply for a One-Day Special Event license for public or private events conducted for charitable, civic, educational, political, religious or certain other qualifying purposes.
Depending on the type of special-event license, the organization may be permitted to sell beer, wine and/or mixed beverages or structure alcohol service through admission or a cash bar. The correct license depends on the beverages being served and how the event is structured.
