UAB alcohol checks showed a decrease of 61% this quarter when compared to the previous quarter. The compliance rate was 84%. How did the Virginia ABC come up with these statistics? Virginia ABC Special Agents visit restaurants and stores all over Virginia – and they send in Underage Buyers to try to buy alcohol. Because Underage sales are illegal and because Underage sales happen! They happen because:
- your employees feel a pressure to hurry (especially when the restaurant is very busy)
- your employee feels cornered by a pushy customer
- your employee has a general lack of attention to detail
- your employee has a lack of knowledge
- your employee simple doesn’t care – in other words: there is no “reason” for them to take the extra step.
This last one? The fact that your employee doesn’t ‘care?’ This is the easiest one to fix. Have them take our training – they’ll care! Because each of your employees needs to understand what HAPPENS when they are caught serving a minor and how much it can hurt your business and them, personally. Serving a person under 21 years old is a Class 1 Misdemeanor and can result in $2,500 fines and/or 12 months in jail! They’ll lose work hours from court time and they’ll have a criminal record for the REST of their lives. Just for being lazy and/or untrained. Those repercussions are for them, personally.
The repercussions for you and your business are heavy fines and you can have your license suspended or revoked. There can even be civil penalties against the establishment.
