Although it seems like common sense, mixing up names on the application or misspelling names is the most common mistakes on VA ABC applications. YUP: the Owner’s Name. This video is going to help you understand the difference between the Legal Entity Name and your Trade Name (also known as “Doing Business As” name).
We can help you with all licenses and name creations
In order to operate a business, in the state of Virginia, you register your Legal Entity Business name with SCC (State Corporation Commission). Let’s not mix it up with your legal name.
- Your Legal Name is the name on your birth certificate.
- Your Legal Entity name is the name that is on your ABC license (it is typically followed by the “LLC” or “INC”).
- Your Trade Name or DBA (Doing Business As) name is what the public knows you as.
First let’s make sure you know the difference between your Legal Entity Name and your Trade Name (also known as “Doing Business As” name).
- Your Legal Entity name will be referred to when you are filing for permits, registration and filling out forms for insurance claims.
- Your Trade Name is what you put on your social-media pages; it is on your sign, your logo and what people call you, when they talk about your business.
How to come up with these names so you won’t make mistakes? ABC Consulting has some suggestions. If you use names with numbers or street names or even abbreviated street names, you’ll end up mixing something up, at some point. For instance, you’ll abbreviate it one time an then spell out the street name in the next instance. Mistakes like that slow down every process, stall the process or even get application kicked back and rejected. Avoid names with street names or any abbreviations. Instead, make sure your Legal Entity Name is easy to remember, with zero abbreviations. All your registrations and applications will be under this name. Keep it simple.
